The Great Friendship

There was once this Great Friendship, two people who were so suited to each other it was often said that they were soulmates. And, even though they had only known each other for a short time, people observing the friendship said that it seemed like the two friends had known each other for a lifetime. Two peas in a pod, you could call them.

The two cared a great deal for each other, sharing in joys and triumphs, woes and frustrations. Then, one day, the unspeakable happened... one heart betrayed the other. The trust was broken, and the friendship almost destroyed.

Maybe what went on after the betrayal was just a farce. A front. Two people trying to regain that which they loved so much. Maybe one person decided to look past the negative and try to take the other back into their heart again. But, maybe it was all in vain.

The person tried to idealize, see things that weren't really there, tried to act like the trust and closeness still existed, when in reality it was just a dark gloom of shadow, with the light so far off in the distance.

The play-acting continued, neither wanting to admit that the once so beautiful friendship, had now died; yet both knowing the truth.

The two hearts started to drift apart. Then one heart shattered into a million pieces, when it realized there were more deceptions. It could not keep loving one it could not trust.

And yet, that heart still cared about the one who had betrayed it, but could also not look the other in the eye, seeing what it now saw. However, the person slowly gained strength... but a dark place still loomed in the heart. A great black sadness existed where once a bright light of happiness dwelled.

What saddens the heart most of all, is that it cannot bear to see the other go on leading the life that it is living, continuing with lies, even having others lie for it, so people will accept the choices it has made. Yet, the heart cannot say what it feels any longer, and whose to say the other will listen.

So, the heart has chosen a perpendicular path, one leading away from the other, even though the souls have been torn apart by the actions of one. It was once thought that the Great Friendship could withstand any obstacles, tear down any barriers, but in truth it has withered away to dust and the hearts go on alone.

People say that time heals all wounds. Will it heal the rift that has grown between the Great Friendship? Maybe one day the world will again know the pure joy that can exist when two hearts find each other.

But then again, maybe not.
