Early Man
(Written with my brother, Charles R. Steinmetz Jr., a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. ;) )
This is the story of early man since the beginning of Dawn:
Upon the land of long ago,
Ran creatures wild, fast and slow.
Vicious creatures of the land,
Upon four legs they did stand.
Some called dinosaurs, others called apes,
All of these tall and great.
In this land roamed rats and mice,
And I'm not talking those that are nice.
Big red eyes, long whiplike tails
Teeth they used, just like nails.
Suddenly the sky filled with lightning and thunder
(It kind of makes one sit and wonder)
The sky turned dark, the clouds looked dreary,
Out of the mists walked one who was weary.
Ape like he looked, however erect he stood,
No clothing he owned, not even a hood.
Rough tools he used made of stone,
Others he made, fashioned of bone.
Soon he discovered what we call fire
And within him rose a buring desire.
Out into the land he began to search,
At first he saw great birds on perch.
What he wanted were others like him,
He knew he must travel deep within.
Far and wide he did go,
The going was rough and he was slow.
He came to a lake, big and blue,
And on the other side, he knew,
Others like him there would be,
For from the distance he did see.
He saw great fires and men making spears,
Pounding on the rocks he did hear.
He built a boat, strong and sturdy,
To get to the other side in a hurry.
When he got there, finally he did see
Creatures that were just like he.
So the story may go on,
Of early man, since the beginning of Dawn.
